Online Dating Safety Tips

Online dating can be an extremely slippery slope to climb. Finding honest people versus not-so-honest types can be a tough job. Cyberspace is filled people that don’t have the best of intentions – and differentiating them from the ones that do is a rather difficult task. Stories have been told about women, and even men on dating sites that have fallen prey to older men with less than honorable intentions. Here are a few points that can help you to keep the losers out of your life and protect yourself while on a blind date or online dating site: • First, make sure that the site where you meet the person has a forum or a public chat room. Most dating sites provide different ways for their members to socialize. This is the best way to find out about the person you have been communicating with. Chances are that other people in the chat room may know a few things about the person you’re chatting up. • Make it a point to ask the person for a photo. Nowadays, most people have a web cam or a digital camera. So ask them to take pictures of themselves using these tools. You can also ask the person to take a picture of themselves holding a piece of paper with a particular phrase written on it. This way, you will know that the person is not lying about his physical appearance or gender. These days, there really is no excuse for not providing potential dates with a photo. • After establishing that the person is not lying and is actually the person they claim to be, you should ask more probing questions, such as their favorite foods and how many pets they have. Do this before you divulge your personal phone number. Just because someone tells you that they are caring for their 80-year-old grandmother or that they volunteer at an orphanage, doesn’t mean they are nice – or honest. When you do decide to exchange phone numbers, make your initial phone calls from a public or cell phone. Don’t give out your home number until you are absolutely comfortable. • After a few phone calls, you can arrange to meet in person. Choose a decent restaurant - don’t go to their house or invite them over to yours. Choose a public place, where you know you will never be alone. Be sure to drive your own car. That way, if things go south, you can leave when you’re ready. • Make sure you inform someone reliable about what you are about to do, who you are going to be with and where you will be. Give them a phone number and have them call to check in on you from time to time, until you get home safely. You should always take your time and trust your instincts. If at all you feel that something is terribly wrong, then it probably is and you should check it out. Online dating can bring together the most perfect relationships, but it is wise to make good decisions and to be extremely careful. Listen to friends and family and if they feel that something is amiss, be alert. Lastly, don’t make any hasty decisions. As the old saying goes ‘better safe than sorry’. .
